At Gendai Martial Arts, we have tried to respond to what people have asked for while maintaining an honesty about what one can expect to gain from our classes. We are about helping you achieve your expectations, not contracts!
Gendai Goshin Jitsu is a self-defense art focused primarily on teaching realistic self-defense skills to people of all ages. Children are able to develop both the physical and mental skills to cope with their life challenges including bullies and worse - predators such as child abductors. For women, the concerns are more obvious and they are welcome to participate in the open adult class or attend the women only class. All our students will learn simple physiological and psychological principles of dealing with realistic, threatening situations. Every principle and technique taught is thoroughly scrutinized to insure its effectiveness under realistic and dynamic street conditions. We believe “how one trains is how one reacts.” At Gendai Martial Arts, we combine experience with proven concepts and techniques derived from karate, ju jitsu, judo, aikido, kempo, goshin jitsu, wrestling and weapons. And, we constantly strive to improve what we know and teach.
Some of the benefits from our self-defense classes are:

Women Only Classes: Gendai Martial Arts offers a variety of options for women to learn to protect themselves. We will eventually offer several fitness programs again as well. A fact worth noting is that the owner and founder, Doug Cobb, was the 5th person to ever teach an aerobic self-defense class in the world. He was the first to offer such a unique program in North Carolina – long before there was Tae Bo. But first, let’s discuss what our philosophy is for women’s self-defense.
We have a STRONG belief that every woman has the right and ability to protect herself! Regardless of your age or fitness level, the concepts and techniques we teach are simple and effective.
As we do not currently have sufficient number of women signed up for the women only class, the class will temporarily be suspended. Please call if interested and if enough sign up, we will resume the classes.
Seki-Ryu Ju Jitsu Classes: Seki-Ryu Ju Jitsu was developed by Master Seki. His soke-dai, Master Skip Koepke is now the head of the system since his instructors passing. Master Skip has become and integral part of our school and has made our school the hombu of his ju jitsu system. Classes are periodically offered that may focus in on the more intricate aspects of Seki-Ryu Ju Jitsu beyond what is taught in the Gendai Goshin Jitsu classes.
Gendai Kobudo Classes (Modern Weapons: Gun, Baton, Umbrella, Rolled Up Magazine, Knife, etc.) (Mon & Fri 9:30-11:00am; Tues & Thu 9:00-10:00pm) Gendai Kobu Jitsu (Modern Weapons Art) is an art designed much like the weapons arts of historical Okinawa in that we teach students how to utilize modern weapons and everyday tools in our lives as defensive extensions of our own hands. Most tools used for practical self-defense purposes is to enable the potential victim of a immediate threat to their person or life to inflict some type of reflex response or trauma to the attacker sufficient enough to stop the threat posed.
Iaijutsu Classes: As it has been one of the owners lifelong dreams to study a traditional samarai sword art, we are pleased to announce that we now offer instruction in iaijutsu under Sensei Skip Koepke. For a more detailed explanation of this 450 year old art, please read the section detailing this wonderful and historic system. (Tues & Thu 9:00-10:00pm)
Iaijutsu
Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu is the Japanese martial art of swordmanship emphasizing drawing and cutting with the samurai sword in a single fluid motion. Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu is a 'koryu bujutsu' (which means 'traditional martial art') with a direct lineage back over 450 years to its founder, Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu, who developed this particular style of swordmanship.
The current headmaster is Miura Takeyuki Hidefusa, Hanshi, Jyudan (10th dan black belt) and founder of the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-Kai (Japanese Ancient Weapons True Spirit Association).
The Jikishin-Kai USA & International continues the tradition of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu iai-jutsu outside of Japan under the instruction of Masayuki Shimabukuro, Hanshi, hachidan (8th dan black belt). Shimabukuro Sensei is a direct student of Miura Sensei and has studied Iaijutsu for over 30 years.
Our instructor, here at Gendai Martial Arts is Koepke Sensei, who studied under Shimabukuro Sensei. Sensei 'Skip' as he is referred to at our school is a Shodan (1st dan black belt).
